The Opportunity of a Lifetime!
When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing; then they said among the heathen, "the LORD hath done great things for them."
The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.
Psalms 126:1-3, KJV
When the Lord brought back Israel from captivity, it was like a dream for them. It was a dream they had previously missed, and it resulted in a long period of punishment in a captivity amongst ungodly people. Their rejection of God in the past in a pursuit of false idols had nearly resulted in a permanent separation from God! But suddenly, miraculously, they were given another chance! It was a chance to serve the Lord God Almighty, and they were not going to miss out on it this time. It must have indeed seemed like a dream!
Do you remember what your own dreams were like? Maybe you had a "dream" guy or girl that you wanted to marry when you were young. Maybe you had a "dream" location - a paradise where you were sure that only happiness resided. Or maybe it was a "dream" job that would fill the rest of your life with the wealth and satisfaction that can only come from the truly great jobs. Whatever your dream was, you were sure that it would be just the thing to make your life complete and if you got it, you would never have to ask for anything else - this dream would be enough.
Then, oddly enough, the dream situation that you had always imagined finally presented itself... only for you to miss it! Maybe you were occupied with something that was pressing, or maybe you thought you already had the dream within your grasp only to see that dream slowly fade into a nightmare! Whatever the reason, you missed your big chance, and it makes you miserable to this day whenever you think about it. How could you have been so stupid? How could you have been so blind as to miss the very thing you had been searching for when it was right in front of your eyes all the time!
Well, the sad reality of life is that we don't always find what we are looking for until it is too late. We end up "settling" for some cheap substitute. Our big chance is gone, and we are sure that we will never have another opportunity such as the "big one" that somehow got away.
The point of today's lesson is just this: It is not too late for the greatest opportunity that a man or woman was ever offered! This opportunity is a chance to serve God and Christ with all of your heart and soul for the rest of your life!
That's it? You've wasted precious minutes of your day only to find that you are reading a religious advertisement? Well, before you go away mad, just hear me out. This opportunity is one that will allow you to work for the Creator of the universe. This opportunity will allow you a relationship with the One who loved you so much that He was willing to allow His only begotten son to die for you so that you might live. That type of love demands your consideration - don't you think? That kind of opportunity deserves more than a second or two of thought before being discarded forever - wouldn't you agree?
God has offered you no less of a chance than to have a life that is filled with more happiness and satisfaction than you could have ever imagined - even if you had latched on to that dream guy or girl, even if you had been magically transported to your dream home, and even if you had landed that dream job that would make you the envy of all humanity. Those types of dreams are usually hollow and filled with the unrealistic expectations that occupy the minds of the self-indulging, but this opportunity of a lifetime has never been meant for the self-indulgent. It is meant for those with the heart of a servant.
And for those with such a heart awaits the opportunity of a lifetime, because it allows us to enter into a covenant relationship with the Father and the Son. This relationship is not temporary - it has the potential to last throughout eternity for those who are wise enough to see it and to accept God's terms for such a great opportunity as this. I would tell you more, but it would do no good, for this type of opportunity requires the great effort of one who is willing to seek it out for themself. It begins by humbling yourself in prayer and imploring God for wisdom. It continues with becoming a daily reader and student of His Word in order that you might find out, for yourself, what this great opportunity will cost you. And then, it will require a lifetime of service - an eternity of service, in fact, for it is the privilege of serving our heavenly Father that is what this opportunity of a lifetime consists of.
The only question that remains is this: Can we see it? Or will we miss out on the greatest opportunity that man has ever been given: The opportunity to become a servant!
