Are We Ready to Give Up on this Generation?
Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-14, NASB
Of all the things that make me angry, I suppose giving up is at the top of the list. When I played sports, I could never tolerate the teammate who stopped giving his best and started hanging his head. It was not better when I coached, for I can remember one of my main goals was to ensure that the kids who played for me never "hung their heads" in defeat. It wasn't that I hated losing so much, it was that I hated to see anyone give up. I suppose I have hundreds of kids and adults who have heard me shout. "Stop hanging your head" down through the years.
Having said that, I know that sports are nothing more than games at their very essence. Winning or losing is a small thing in the big picture. But the principle of giving your best effort to the end, on the other hand, is a very big deal indeed. For whether we are talking about the child's game that trains us for life, or the real living of that life, we need something that is substantial enough within ourselves to be determined to never give up.
I say all of this to make this point: I am afraid when it comes to the current generation of kids, many may already be hanging their heads and giving up. We often stand as if helpless when we see this generation being taught that sexual perversion is normal, and that God's instructions regarding chastity are perverse. We listen to the language that the smallest of our tykes are using and think that's just the way it is. We see the most important skills of learning being marginalized in our schools and whatever passes for the political correctness of the day being emphasized instead.
These things are as distressing as they are undeniable, but what can we do? The response of the majority is to hang their heads, give in to the loudest voices, and then give up. But we cannot yield to this temptation for our children's futures are too valuable to just quit. Our kids need godly adults to be there for them and take a godly stand. But, again, what can we do? We've tried "character counts" programs but they have all seemed to fall short.
We shouldn't be surprised I suppose because you can no more teach character without the Bible than you can teach transmission repair without a car. I don't mean to say that it is not possible, but if you are not intending on ever putting that transmission into a car to drive that car, then what is the point of having a working transmission. In the same vein, what good is teaching a child standards without God? You might teach them the standards of men as they exist today, but those standards will have changed by tomorrow. So if we are not teaching them standards for the purpose of serving God, then what's the point?
Here is something that hundreds of communities have been doing. There is a court tested, Constitutionally compatible method of teaching our kids the standards of God from the Bible that is both legal and practical. It is currently being taught to hundreds of thousands of kids in our public schools today, and it is being done during school hours. It requires community involvement for it must be done off campus, with no school funds or resources being used, and with parental consent. It is not easy, so those whose existence revolves around convenience will not like it.
But for those who are interested in not giving up on our kids just yet, it is a bright ray of light in a world that is rapidly going dark. It's called "released time" and it is basically a government approved method of teaching our children the standards of God from the Bible for about one hour a week. It requires a great deal of effort from the community for just one hour, but that one hour has shown results that have resulted in everything from fewer discipline problems in the classroom, to lower rates of drug use, teen pregnancy and crime in the community. If you and your school district have not looked into this "released time" program, you might want to check it out. It might just be one way of forgetting the failures of the past and pressing on to a goal that is truly worthy: The saving of the next generation!
