Hear O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

These commandments that I give to you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children.

Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9, NIV

The greatest commandment ever made was to love God with all of the soul, heart and strength. Such a love would then spill over to His commands which were not only to be upon the people's hearts, but they were to be taught to their children at every opportunity. That not being enough, they were to have reminders of the law of God everywhere.

In other words they were to love God with every ounce of their being, love His commands, teach them to their children and write them down where they could see them. In short, the were to be immersed in His Word in every aspect of their lives because of their great love for Him.

Because of this, God blessed them beyond their wildest dreams. He will do the same for us today, if only we will have this type of undivided love towards Him and devotion for His Word. Such a love will change every aspect of our lives, as well as the lives of those we love.

Do you have that kind of love and commitment towards your Creator... or do you think that this kind of wholehearted devotion was only for a people of a bygone era?

Jesus replied, "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your mind.

This is the first and greatest commandment."

Matthew 23:37-38, NIV

Today is the 24th day of the 30 day challenge to study the Books of Moses, with Deuteronomy 5-8 being the text for today. May God richly bless you as you devote your life to love He and His Son with all of your heart and soul and mind and strength!

See, I am setting before today a blessing and a curse - the blessing if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today, the curse if you disobey the commands of the LORD your God and turn away from the way that I command you today...

Deuteronomy 11:26-28, NIV

There in a nutshell is the agreement that God has set before His people of every era: Obey and you will be blessed; disobey and you will be cursed.

Throughout Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the Israelites of God's eternal covenant: Obey and you will be blessed; disobey and you will be cursed!

This was the same deal that He set before the world when He spoke directly to the people during the times of the Patriarchs. It was the agreement He made with Adam and Eve before they were driven out of the Garden. It was the deal He made with Noah's generation before He destroyed the world with a flood. It was the understanding He had with the people of Sodom and Gomorrah before He rained fire and brimstone from the sky.

It was this basic covenant that He made with the nation of Israel before He made them fall in the desert, and now Moses is renewing this covenant with the next generation before he dies: Obey and you will be blessed; disobey and you will be cursed!

And, most importantly for you and I, it is the covenant that He has made with the entire world after the sacrifice of His only begotten Son: Obey and you will be blessed; disobey and you will be cursed!

Which choice will you make? Which choice... are you making right now?

If you have been choosing badly, then you need to rethink your position before God. For, although God is filled with grace and mercy and love, you will have to choose whether you will accept these blessings on His terms. If you have been choosing badly, why not repent and make a different choice? Your very eternity depends on the right choice!

"Not everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord" will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven."

the words of Jesus, as recorded in Matthew 7:21, NIV

Today is the 25th day.

Do not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect or flaw in it, for that would be detestable to Him.

Deuteronomy 17:1, NIV

Of all the lessons that the Old Testament teaches, this is one of the most important. Many people think that they are doing God some sort of a favor when they give Him anything. Because of this attitude, they feel justified in giving God an inferior sacrifice, believing that somehow this will be enough.

But they are wrong!

And we are wrong anytime that we bring to God anything other than our best! Whether it be a flawed sacrifice or a flawed effort or a flawed commitment, if we are intentionally giving something to God that is less than the very best that we have, then we will should not expect to receive any blessing from God. Why?

Because anything less than our very best is not only unacceptable to God, it is detestable to Him!

Knowing that, how do you think that He views your service to Him and to Jesus? If that service is in your own admission something less than your very best, wouldn't you agree that you need to do something about that?

If you have been giving God a flawed and defective sacrifice, then welcome to the club! Now, what will you do to make sure that you give Him nothing less than your very best from this point forward?

"Give, and it will be given to you.

A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.

For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

the words of Christ as recorded in Luke 6:38, NIV

Today is the 27th day of the 30 day challenge to study through the Books of Moses, with Deuteronomy 17-20 being the text for today. Since we will be beginning a new 30 day challenge with the start of the New year tomorrow, we will not have articles just yet for the last three days of this study. The final three studies for those who would like to complete this series before moving on are: Deuteronomy 21-24, Deuteronomy 25-29, and Deuteronomy 30-34. May God richly bless you as you seek to give Him and Jesus your very best!

If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let us follow other gods (gods you have not known) and let us worship them," you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer.

The LORD is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and all your soul... You must purge the evil from among you.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3, 5, NIV

Under the Law of Moses, any person that even suggested that an idol be worshiped, regardless of whether that person was a stranger or the closest of kin, that person was to be put to death. That is how serious God was about having idols before Him. Such evil had to be purged or it would become the downfall of the entire nation.

Now this may sound harsh to those of us who have only lived under the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2), but you have to remember the era in which these people lived and the standard of holiness that the LORD placed upon His chosen people. The punishment had to be swift and final lest the entire nation be tempted to turn away from God and follow the fornication and shedding of innocent blood that accompanied idol worship.

But why talk about such difficult things today? Don't we live under an era of grace and love? Isn't it true that God will save us regardless of what we have done? The answer to these questions is "yes and no". Now I don't want to sound like I'm double talking, but I do believe that we should understand what grace and love will do for us today. God's grace will give us a second chance, if we will seek that chance in His way. God's love permits us to come back to Him, if we will come back on His terms. And God in His mercy will forgive us of any sin, but only if we seek that forgiveness in His prescribed way.

You hear a lot of talk about "unconditional" grace and love and forgiveness, but such talk is ridiculous. God does extend these things to all men regardless of sin - that is true - but we must never misuse God's mercy in such a way as to imply that it is unconditional. Do you realize that if God's love and grace and forgiveness were without conditions that there could be no Hell? Maybe that's why some modern day "prophets and dreamers" have come to us saying that there is no such place of eternal punishment...

but they are lying to you!

Now before I continue, I do want to be clear on this: I am not suggesting that everyone who uses the phrases, "unconditional love" and "unconditional grace" are intentionally lying to you. It is true that God extends His love and grace to all - along with His offer of forgiveness, but God has always had conditions on what defines acceptable service to Him, and we should not mock Him by saying that such service comes without a change of lifestyle, including repentance.

It was Jesus who warned us of Hell! It was Jesus who told us that we must not merely say to Him, "Lord, Lord" but that to enter Heaven we must do the will of His Father who is in Heaven. Why then do we believe such lies when we are told that God has no conditions upon our salvation? It is because we are human and our human nature longs to hear what it wants to hear. This was true during the time of Moses when people wanted to believe the false prophets who said they could indulge in the adulterous pursuit of idols, and it is true in our Christian era when false teachers will come and promise us the right to sin and still be saved without repentance and having our sins washed away.

So what are we to do? Fortunately, we are no longer commanded to kill such false prophets - God will take care of them in His time - but our duty is still the same: We are to purge the evil from among us, because God's standards for holiness have never changed. And despite modern day "dreamers" who say otherwise, God's grace has never been intended to be used as a license for sin.

For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

Jude 1:4, NIV

Today is the 26th day of the 30 day challenge to study the Books of Moses, with Deuteronomy 13-16 being the text for today. May God richly bless you as you purge the evil from your life in order to serve Him in the way that His holiness requires!
