A Lawless Nation, Part 2 – A House Divided

“Of all the troubling aspects of the Obama Presidency, none is more dangerous than the president’s persistent pattern of lawlessness…” Senator Ted Cruz “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Abraham Lincoln (quoting Jesus)

As mentioned yesterday, I recently had the privilege of attending a Town Hall meeting sponsored by Senator Ted Cruz and hosted by his Texas panhandle representative, Shea Woodard-Hall. While I have tried to be conscientious in voting and in contacting my representatives on matters that I consider important, I had never been to a town hall meeting.

I was pleasantly surprised at the opportunity to speak that was afforded each person in attendance. I was also a bit disappointed in the fact that only ten or twelve people even showed up for the meeting. Since this was my first time to attend such an event, it is by no means a criticism of those not present, but I was a bit saddened at the lack of interest, nonetheless.

Senator Cruz’s comment above pretty well summarized my main concern and my motivation for going to this meeting in the first place: We have a President who is lawless. That the Senator had the courage to publicly state this truth is commendable, and very much akin to the “Emperor has no clothes” verity uttered by that little boy of fairy tale fame.

Sadly, we have become a lawless nation in many ways. We have a Supreme Court that made a ruling so outrageous concerning the recent health carelaw that the four dissenting judges united to write that the ruling was judicial activism, that it exceeded federal authority, and that it went beyond the powers allowed in the U.S. Constitution.

In other words, it was lawless.

We have a federal court system that has ruled in state after state that voter I.D. laws are unconstitutional. These judges have reasoned that such laws are discriminatory towards older people and minorities. I can think of nothing more discriminatory or racist than insinuating that older persons and minorities are too stupid to get a picture I.D. It is as insulting as it is ludicrous.

Do these judges not know that you cannot even purchase tobacco or alcohol without a picture I.D.? Do they not know that you cannot attend an Obama rally without a picture I.D.? Or fly on a commercial airline? The judges knew this but they made their rulings anyway. I’m convinced that a reasonable person can only conclude that the judges made these laws to assist those who put them in power to remain in power. They did it to cheat!

In other words, they are lawless.

According to former Justice Department Officials, (at least one who has resigned in protest) we have the head of the Justice Department – Eric Holder – refusing to prosecute racial crimes that are committed by people of certain races. This is the definition of racism.

In other words, it is lawless.

And now we have a president who has publicly stated that he will act when congress will not.

In other words, in the words of at least one prominent senator, he is lawless.

Does this make you mad? It should! Regardless of your political persuasion, it should! If we only want the laws of the land to apply to those who are not on our side at any given moment, we are despicable… and we are lawless.

And… when laws only apply to the foes of those in power, we are in severe danger of becoming a house divided. Do you remember how well that works out in the end?

“If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.”

Jesus, as recorded in Mark 3:25, RSV
