Study #8: The Way That Seems Right Sometimes Isn't

"There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."

Proverbs 14:12, RSV

This particular passage has been one of the main reasons that I have tried to be more careful in the way I handle the Bible. At first it may not seem fair to us - after all, if a way seems right, how can we be blamed for taking that way? And how can something that seems so right lead to death? Is God being unfair?

The passage for study on this 8th day of the Bible challenge, Matthew 22-24, raises similar questions. In Matthew 22:1-14, we read of a great banquet that is to come. Many come up with all sorts of excuses for why they can't come - so they don't! Since the parable appears to be referring to heaven, this is very serious indeed.

But that particular lesson is not the one that we struggle with as much as the next lesson. In verses 11-14, we read of  man who did accept the invitation, but who was not "clothed" properly. No big deal, right? Apparently it was because the Master of the banquet ordered the man to be thrown outside into the outer darkness! The implication of this place of darkness is that of Hell.

Now, I would tell you what I think is meant by not being "clothed" means, but this is your study. As you go through the New Testament, look for passages that tell you how to be clothed with Christ, and I believe you will find the answer to this mystery.

Isn't studying the Word of God fascinating? It is more than that, for it will reveal to you the path of salvation for you and those you love. May God bless you richly as you seek the knowledge needed to serve God and Christ so that you can be with Them in Heaven for all eternity!

"Friend", he asked, "how did you get in here without wedding clothes?"

The man was speechless.
