Study #70: When People No Longer Put Up With God

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

II Timothy 4:3-4, NIV

The passage above never fails to stun me: There will come a time when men will not put up with God's teaching. I cannot imagine a worse state to come before God on the Day of Judgment than to have lived a life wherein you could not tolerate His commands. What do you suppose the outcome will be for such a man on that final day?

Throughout this study of the New Testament we have seen that there is a right way and that we can find it, if we will only seek. Jesus promised this very thing when He said, "Seek, and you will find." (Matthew 7:7).

The problem is that there are so many people who don't want to find, for that would then require a change of lifestyle. Still, they believe in God and that there will be a heaven and hell, so they are uncomfortable to simply ignore God's Word. But instead of carefully searching God's truth for themselves, they pay people to preach what they want to hear. I am convinced that the reason there are so many denominations is that men have discovered that it is very profitable to tell people what they want to hear.

And people will pay quite handsomely for what they want to hear.

This is why we are studying! We are trying to distinguish between what God is saying and what we want to hear.

If you have noticed in your studies that the Bible really can be understood, then well done! God designed His Word so that it could be understood, because He wants all men to be saved. And to make sure that His writers would not make a mistake with His Bible, He inspired them to write down just what He wanted.

If you have made it this far in your studies, I believe that you are discovering these truths more and more each day.

Now, why not do something about this new found knowledge: Why not act upon it and live - really live - by the perfect instructions from your loving Father.

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

II Timothy 3:16-17, RSV

Today is the 70th day of the 90 day challenge to study through the New Testament. The chapters for study are II Timothy 3 & 4. May God richly bless your efforts as you continue to equip yourselves for every good work!
