"This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; but if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the  blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin."

I John 1:5-7, RSV

I John is written by John the apostle in the latter years of his life. Likely in his late 80's or early 90's, John is now sending instructions to Christians as to how they should live. He talks about the fact that God is light, and how we are to walk in that light. He simply points out that those who continue to sin by walking in the darkness have no part of God. Further, should these fallen Christians attempt to claim that they are still walking according to God's way (the light) then they are liars!

I don't know about you, but I don't like being called a liar. Yet, that is exactly what I would be if I decided that I could live a life of sin and still claim to be living as a Christian or, as John puts it, if I was claiming to still be in that precious "fellowship with Him".

Simply stated: if we are no longer walking in God's way - the light - we no longer have fellowship with God or Jesus. This is one of the plainest teachings of the New Testament, yet it is perhaps the single most violated of all of God's teachings.

For example, how many people living sexually immoral lives still claim to be walking in the light? How many so-called Christians practice every sort of dishonesty in their work or play, yet still consider themselves to be enjoying fellowship with God? How many claim that they love God even though they have stopped even trying to quit a particular sin, yet are deluding themselves into thinking that they are still okay?

John made it even more clear in the next chapter:

"He who says, 'I know Him', but disobeys His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him;" I John 2:4, RSV

For those who may just be coming to an awareness that their lifestyle of sin has separated them from the fellowship and that they are therefore in danger of being lost (or are already lost), God through John gives this incredible lifeline of hope.

"but whoever keeps His word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are In Him: he who says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked." I John 2:5-6, RSV

That seems too simple, doesn't it? If you have obeyed God's plan of salvation that you have now read and studied for yourself, but have "gotten away" from the church, then you have seen God's warning and His hope: The warning is that if we are not walking in the light anymore, then we are in darkness. In plain words: we are lost! But the hope is that if we go back to God's way (the light) then we are restored to that precious fellowship and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sins.

So to those of you who have heard the good news of Christ and have believed it, who have confessed your belief in Jesus as the Son of God, and who have at one time repented of all your sins and had those sins washed away in the pure waters of baptism. but then have since that time wandered back into the darkness, you have this promise: If you leave the darkness and return to the light you will continually be cleansed from all sin.

That means you get to go to heaven!

Isn't God good!

"Again Jesus spoke to them saying, 'I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of light.'"

John 8:12, RSV

Today is the 81st day of the 90 day challenge to study the entire New Testament. Today's reading is I John 1-3. May God richly bless your efforts as you seek the light and as you continue to walk in it!
