In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

John 3:3, NIV

We hear it all the time: "I'm a born again Christian". But what does that mean? How do you accomplish that seemingly impossible task of being born again? That's what Nicodemus wanted to know - he wanted so very urgently to know! He even exclaimed that a person surely couldn't enter the womb a second time to be born again. And Jesus agreed. Then He told Nicodemus the key: A man had to be born of water and of spirit in order to be born again.

And that was all Jesus would reveal at the time.

However, after the cross, Jesus' apostles had a lot to say about being born again. They talked about the water and the Spirit. They talked about being "born anew" and being "raised to walk a newness of life."

But that's another study for another day. It's also a study that you must do for yourself if you are ever going to be certain of what God has revealed about being born again.

And I am confident that you will continue in that study because you want to be in the kingdom!

It's what we are here for in the first place.

The Third chapter of John has another verse that is worthy of our attention - it is this:

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

John 3:16, RSV

I love that verse! But, as much as we hate to admit it, there is more to our service than just believing, for Jesus also gave this caution:

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven."

Matthew 7:21, NIV

This is why we are studying, isn't it? It's so that we can find out about what God says, not what we or our preachers think. Still, as disappointing as it is for some to find that God requires something more than the bare minimum effort to enter His kingdom, it is comforting to know that He left behind precise instructions for exactly how we might accomplish, through grace, this noble goal of being in His kingdom forever!

Today is day 24 of the Study through the New Testament, with John 2-4 being the chapters for today's study. May God bless your efforts as you seek to serve Him in His way!
