"Listen! A sower went out to sow... and other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain..."

Mark 4:3, 8, RSV

I love the parable of the sower! Jesus' great illustration speaks of a man sowing seed - some along the path, some in rocky soil, some in soil that was weedy, and some in good soil. In revealing the message of this parable to His apostles, Jesus indicates that the seed is the word of God and that the soil is the hearts of men. The path stands for men with hearts so hard that the good seed cannot penetrate its surface, so the birds of the air take the seed away.

The rocky soil stands for men whose hearts are shallow. Since that is the case, the seed springs up quickly, but having no root it quickly dies. The weedy soil stands for men whose hearts are divided - giving part of their attention to the fruitful works of God, but much more of their efforts to things of this world... and the cares of the world win out, thereby rendering the good seed useless.

Then there is the good soil! This stands for men and women with noble and good hearts. Like a well prepared and finely cultivated field, it cannot help producing a bumper crop when good seed is sown in its soil. And, since the seed is the word of God, the seed is perfect. And when the perfect seed meets the ready heart an explosion occurs!

And the harvest is thirty times or sixty times or even a hundred times what is sown!

Do you... have a good a noble heart? I seriously doubt that you would be reading this if you at least did not have the potential for such a heart and, therefore, such potential to do your part to produce a great harvest for the Master!

"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God... the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop."

Luke 8:11&15, NIV
