Choosing Sides
Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right. Abraham Lincoln
I remember "choosing sides" when I was younger. We would go from door to door in the neighborhood, gathering enough kids to play baseball or football or whatever, then we would choose sides. It was always kinda crummy when you got chose for the bad team, but it was always exciting when you got to be with the ones you wanted on your team. That's when the game was the most fun.
As I got older, I still chose sides. Sometimes I chose the side, sometimes the side chose me by default. Looking back, whenever I ended up on a side of any importance without some forethought, I nearly always lived to regret it. So, I learned to be a bit more discerning in my choices and I learned that life is greatly enhanced whenever you choose your side wisely.
I have noticed lately that there seem to be an awful lot of people who don't give much thought to the side that they are on. As a result they often not only damage their own lives, but they also cause a great deal of harm to others. This is especially true in our nation's politics. Many people don't give much thought to what their "side" stands for, but they will defend their side to the death. This, I believe, has led to a great deal of harm. It has led to huge debt that our children must somehow pay back. It has, at times, led to unnecessary conflicts. It has also led to 54 million babies having their lives capriciously removed from this world.
I have also noted how often people make very poor choices when choosing sides in religion. They say they love God, but they don't always agree with His rules - so they choose the side of the Devil by default... and they wonder why they are so miserable!
If you are experiencing regret from some of the poor choices that you have made in the past, maybe it's time to pay attention to whose side you are on. If you find out that you are not on God's side, then you must change or continue to suffer for being on the wrong side, for God is always right and He will never change sides.
Whose side are you on?
But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15, NIV
