Whatever Happened to the Constitution?

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

Acts 4:18, NIV

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or in the free exercise thereof.

The Constitution of the United States of America, First Amendment

Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light.

George Washington

I am continually amazed at what people accept for truth in America. For example, most people believe that the constitution has a doctrine of separation of church and state. It does not. In fact, the very portion of the constitution which judges have inexplicably used to remove God from the public square  - including our schools - is the very portion of the constitution which was designed to prevent such a travesty from ever occurring.

The fact is that the founders were concerned that the freedom of religion would somehow be squelched by evil men in positions of power. This is what had happened in England's empire, so they were determined for it not to happen in America. The way that they would protect religious freedom was two-fold: Keep government from making some sort of national religion and keep government from restricting the free exercise of religion.

It is interesting to note how they set about to accomplish these twin goals: By talking about God in public, including by teaching the Bible and praying within public schools. This is an undeniable and well documented piece of history that cannot be missed. Still don't believe it? Consider the very words of our first president, and co-signer of the Constitution:

"Let us with cation indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."   "It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible" George Washington

Now do you see why the Bible was taught in public schools - not only during the administration of our first president, but in the 33 subsequent administrations - down through the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower?  Do you see why congress begins their sessions with prayer to this very day?  Do you see why the supreme court walls are carved with quotes from the Bible? This nation was not set up to protect the government from the church: It was set up to protect the church from the government.

Until we recognize these truths, I am afraid that we will continue to find Washington's warnings coming true: A nation's morality cannot prevail in the exclusion of religious principle and it is impossible to lead without God and the Bible. We have tried, in recent years - we've even re-interpreted some of the most obvious parts of the Constitution to do so. But... we are failing. The reason we are failing is not because of the truths that George Washington taught. They are true because of the words that the Bible has taught  every since it was given by God to guide the lives of men.

You cannot prevent government from establishing a religion by preventing the free exercise of religion... why can't we see that truth?

But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard. Acts 4:19-20, NIV

"The truth shall set you free" Jesus
