Restoring Greatness

We have this day restored the Sovereign to Whom all alone men ought to be obedient.

He reigns in Heaven... Samuel Adams 1776

When trying to determine the exact cause of America's greatness throughout the years, one only has to read the words of the men who founded this nation. With few exceptions, the founders believed that the true head of this nation was God, and God alone. It was this belief that shaped their decisions. It was their belief that a nation should be ruled by THE King and not a king that gave them the courage to declare independence.

A few years later, it was this belief that allowed a group of men with widely diverse opinions and interests to agree on the things that were of true importance: That all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with the right to pursue life, liberty and happiness.

Throughout the years, men and women of prominence have rested on this understanding that our nation was ruled by God and not men. This is the true secret of our success. It has been for over two hundred years, and this success will only continue as long as this nation does not forget just Who rules the lives of men.

I think that some of our elected officials in recent years have forgotten this important fact. It seems that some of them have been bold enough to think that they govern the lives of men, rather than having their lives governed by God. As a result, our nation's greatness has slipped a few notches. Many are puzzled by this decline, thinking that if they could only be given a bit more power and a bit more authority that America's greatness can be restored.

But the only way that greatness can be restored is by putting God back in His rightful place as Head of our nation. Of course, He has never left His rightful position as the Sovereign. It's just that unrighteous men have deluded themselves into thinking that they are our leaders, instead of public servants. More important, they have forgotten that they are servants of God.

If we are ever to restore America to the great nation that it once was, it will only be because we have learned what we seem to have temporarily forgot: Restoring greatness means restoring God.

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, "The Lord reigns".
