Day 30: Solomon's Song

Make haste, my beloved.

Song of Solomon 8:14, RSV

The Song of Solomon is unique to the Scriptures. So unusual is it that for many years men just could not seem to accept it for what it appeared to be: A story of love between a man (Solomon) and his Shulammite wife. Instead, many students of the Bible have tried to make it a comparison between Christ and the church, but if it is indeed that, it took the wisdom of the scholar to discern it, for there is no reference in all of Scripture to indicate that comparison.

So what should we make of this book? Well, it's probably beyond me, but if we take it at face value it appears to be an inspired description of the beauty of marriage - in this case Solomon's - and of the appropriate nature of the physical relationship that can only be found within the sanctified relationship between a man and his wife.

My beloved is mine, and I am his.

Song of Solomon 2:16, RSV
