Day 8: Why We Read the Prophets of God
Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the LORD;
Look to the rock from which you were cut.
Isaiah 51:1, NIV
This might be the first time that you have ever really read all the books of the prophets of God. You might wonder if it is even necessary. You might wonder if your time is better spent reading from somewhere else in God's Word. But Jesus said that, "man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God", so we know that we are to read all of God's word. And, just look at what you would have missed if you hadn't read from this portion of Isaiah today:
But My salvation will last forever, My righteousness will never fall. Do not fear the reproach of men or be terrified by their insults. Isaiah 51:6-7, NIV
For He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:12, NIV
Do not be afraid; you will not suffer shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated... for your Maker is your husband - the LORD Almighty is His name. Isaiah 54:4-5, NIV
In righteousness you will be established; Tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear... This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD. Isaiah 54:14, 17, NIV
Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him while He is near. Isaiah 55:6, NIV
Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death. Isaiah 57:2, NIV
These are just a few of the eternal truths that men miss when they cannot be bothered with the Old Testament books of prophecy. Aren't you glad that you are taking the time to read from these truths today? Just think about what you might have missed!
Jesus answered, It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Matthew 4:4, NIV
Today is day 8 of the 30 day challenge to read through the books of the prophets of God, with Isaiah 51-58 being the readings for today. May God richly bless you as you seek to live by His every word!
