Wisdom builds her house,

but folly with her own hands tears it down.

Proverbs 14:1, RSV

Perhaps one of the hardest things for busy people to "get" is the reason that they should take time to read the Bible. After all, they live pretty good lives. They are as good as the next man - maybe even better than that "hypocrite" neighbor of theirs that reads the Bible and goes to church. They are nice to people. They are rarely mean to others unless of course they really deserve it.

So why spend so much time reading a book that no one can understand anyway?

Such is the argument of the fool. And the fool, though he does not suspect it, is tearing down his spiritual house, board by board, until all that is left is the physical man. This might be okay, for a while... but what does this worldly man do (nice guy though he may be) when the storms hit?

You see, we all need to ask this question because the storms really do happen. We get sick. Someone betrays us. We lose our job.A loved one struggles and maybe even dies... what then?

Jesus has the answer for that question: Build your spiritual house on the rock! And what is that rock? It is Jesus! You get your whole life to decide which foundation you will build upon, and God will let you choose which foundation that will be. Some men will build their spiritual houses on the Rock and will, therefore, weather any storm. Some men will build their houses without the spiritual foundation that is Jesus Christ, so their houses will not stand. It's as if they tore their house down with their own hands...

Which man are you?

Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.

Jesus, as recorded in Matthew 7:24-27, RSV
