Day 22: Find the Book!
Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, "I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the LORD." He gave it to Shaphan, who read it... Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, "Hilkiah the priest has given me a book." And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.
II Kings 22:8-10, NIV
This may be one of the most important turning points in all of history: "I have found the Book". When Josiah, a good man and a good king, heard the words from the Book, he was cut to the heart and immediately knew that he and the people were in trouble because they had not been obeying the words contained in the Book.
If you have been undertaking this study, I suspect that you feel the same way. Perhaps you have read of things from the Book of the Law that we are under - the New Testament - and have come to the understanding that you have not been doing the things that were written. Perhaps you are reading from the Old Law for the first time, and are discovering for yourself how God demands obedience, how He rewards that obedience, but how He punishes disobedience.
Perhaps you have thought of our own nation where we have gotten so wicked that we actually permit people to kill their babies and sell their body parts. Or perhaps you have thought of our giving our nation over to perverts who marry homosexuals and threaten anybody who doesn't like it. Or perhaps you have thought about how our nation is so obsessed with pornography that you can hardly turn on a television, open a magazine, or click on your computer without being bombarded with vile images.
Or perhaps you have thought about our own nation's war on Christians, where Christians are required to pay taxes and fines, but are not permitted the freedom of speech and assembly that our own Constitution affords.
What is the remedy, you might be wondering? It is simply to find the book, to read it, and to act upon it's words.
But woe to us, if we do not!
When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. He gave these orders... "Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the LORD's anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book;"
II Kings 22: 11-13, NIV
Today is the 22nd day of the challenge to read through the books of the champions and the kings in 30 days, with I Chronicles 1-8 being the reading for today. May God richly bless you as you find the Book and walk in its ways!
