Day 17: The Killing of Unwanted Children

"The Lord said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites: Any Israaelite or alien living in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death. The people of the community are to stone him. I will set My face against that man and I will cut him off from his people; for by giving his children to Molech, he has defiled My sanctuary and profaned My holy name.'"

Leviticus 20:1-3, NIV

Did you know that they had abortion in the Old Testament times? Of course they didn't often try to kill the child in the womb, for that would endanger the evil mother as well as the unwanted child. So they waited for the child to be born, and when they decided they did not want the child for some reason or another, they would kill it.

Of course simply killing the child would have made the mother and father murderers, so the people of that time had another way to casually dispose of their unwanted children - they "dedicated" them to an idol. In one such religion, historians tell us, the idol was be a hollowed out bronze figure with fire placed in its "belly". Either the parents or the so-called priest to this demon idol would then place the screaming child on the scalding hot arms of the idol and then roll the baby into the flames.

They pretended that this practice was honorable. The pretended that this practice was noble. They pretended that this practice was a service to their "god".

Of course, it was nothing of the sort. These parents just didn't want a child, so they killed it.

Sound familiar?

Part of the good news of Jesus Christ is that every sin can be forgiven, if we will just seek that repentance in His way. There are millions of people living with the guilt of sacrificing their children to the modern idols of our age who need to be relieved of that guilt... and they can! This is why we read!

"If the people of the community close their eyes when that man gives one of his children to Molech and the fail to put him to death, I will set My face against that man and his family and will cut off from their people both him and all who follow him in prostituting themselves to Molech."

Leviticus 20:4-5, NIV
