Day 7: Am I In the Place of God?

"Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God?"

Genesis 50:19, NIV

After reading the account of how Joseph's brother's sold him into slavery, you can see why they might have been afraid that he might take revenge upon them once he became second in command in all of Egypt. But Joseph's reply was as impressive as it was enlightening:

"Am I in the place of God?"

I believe this is the attitude that we all need to take more often than not. There are times when people have wronged us and we are in a position to really let them have it, but we should pause before we do and consider the beautiful example that Joseph gave. Instead of retaliation, he gave forgiveness.

And, no doubt, he won his brothers over in a way that revenge never could have accomplished.

Maybe we would all do well to remember that example the next time that we are attempted to give someone everything that they have coming to them. It's true that bad behavior does need addressing, but it is also true that a little forgiveness can sometimes go farther in making a point than harsh retaliation ever can.

And, people will love you for it!

"A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to a his glory to overlook an offense." Proverbs 19:11
