Day 11: America's Greatness Depends on Obedience to God

AMERICA IS GREAT ONLY WHEN AMERICA IS GOOD!

"America is great, because she is good, and if America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great."

Alexis de Tocqueville

One of the vital facts that many modern day historians overlook when viewing the rise of America is the virtue of the founders. While these people had problems just like men and women of any other era, they also possessed virtues that separated them from the people of most ages. Their greatest virtue was their belief in God and Christ: They not only believed in them, but the founders believed that God and Christ had to be obeyed in order to receive their favor.

And the founders were not shy about their desire to be the type of people they needed to be in order to receive that favor. Reading from some of the writings of our founders like Washington, Adams, Webster and Jay is at times like reading from a good sermon. The fact is that the vast majority of our founders lived what the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville had observed: America was great because her people were good.

We look around us today and see that many of our chosen leaders do not believe that. They instead focus on the past mistakes, rather than acknowledging that it was righteous America that fought to end evils like slavery, Hitler's Nazism, and Communism. Those who condemn the righteous part of American history refuse to admit that it was good men and women - men and women who believed in the words of Christ and who tried to follow those words - who made America great.

America can be great again, but only if America becomes good again. The only source for that goodness is God and Christ. And there is only one source where we may read of what They require for goodness, and that source is the Bible. This is why we read!

Have you read your Bible today? This is day 11 of the 30 Day Bible Challenge, and today's reading is from John 6 - 13. You will read within the pages of John about God's only beloved Son. And you will read of how, without apology, He is the only way to God. If you have been taking up this challenge to read God's word then you have been learning how to live and how to be good in God's eyes.

And America needs men and women to be good again so that they can step up and help her be great again. More importantly, God needs His people to be good again. It can be done but it needs to start with you!

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

the words of Jesus, as recorded in John 14:6, NIV
