Day 8: Jesus Can Help When No One Else Can

JESUS CAN HELP WHEN NO ONE ELSE CAN

"Don't be afraid; just believe..."

Jesus, as recorded in Luke 8:50, NIV

The 8th chapter of Luke is a microcosm of one of the main themes of Jesus' ministry: Jesus can help you, when nobody else can.

In verse 26 of this chapter, we meet a man possessed by many demons. No one today knows exactly who or what these demons were, but it seems likely that they were just the souls of lost men or of fallen angels, because we have no indication that God ever created anyone who was lost without having first been given a chance at salvation. We are also not told why God permitted these demons to have a time here on earth during Jesus' ministry but, if for no other reason, their very presence demonstrated for all who would care to see that God is more powerful than Satan or demons.

Regardless of just who these demons were or what they were doing here, there was a man in the region of the Gerasenes who was possessed by many of them. And though the man had been chained and guarded, nobody was able to help him... that is until Jesus came along and freed him from this terrible possession that had ruled his life for so long.

Jesus was able to help him, when no one else could.

Next we come across a woman who had suffered for twelve years with a malady that no doctor could cure. As a matter of fact, we are told in Mark that she had "suffered a great deal" under the hand of many doctors, but they only made the matter worse, not better. Then after twelve years of having her life consumed by constant suffering, Jesus healed her - just by her touching the cloak He was wearing.

And Jesus was able to help this woman, when nobody else could.

Then we come across a man named Jairus, whose daughter was sick and at the point of death. Frantically, he came to Jesus begging Him to come to his house and heal his daughter. While they were on the way, he got the news that every parent dreads: His daughter, his precious daughter,  had died. That's when Jesus said the words you read above: "Don't be afraid, just believe, and she will be healed."

When Jesus arrived at the house of Jairus the people there were wailing and mourning. But Jesus went in to the house, took the little girl by the hand...

...and raised her from the dead! Imagine the power! Imagine the relief and the overwhelming sense of gratitude that Jairus and his wife must have felt: When nobody else could help, Jesus did.

And He can help you, too, if you will let Him! Do you need His help? You can read about how to obtain it in the pages of the Bible. Today's reading consists of Luke 6-13. I hope you will read it. It will change your life!

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Matthew 11:28, NIV
